Guide to our holistic classes

If you’re wanting to try classes in Studio 2 , which we have branded our Shala Room (holistic), we understand that it can be a bit of a minefield knowing what is what if you are new to such practices -particularly the different kinds of yoga. We try and offer as much as we can and listen to our members with what is currently popular ( though we are aware that Reformer Pilates is having a revival, that is something we are ruling out to the cost).

To help you out a little, here’s a comprehensive guide to the different kinds of holistic classes we offer - by our instructors.

HATHA YOGA

Monday 7pm (Laura)/  Wednesday 7am (Maya/Milly) Thursday 12:15 (Rupi) Thursday 5:30(Ceilidh) /Sunday 12:30 (Ceilidh)

If you’re new to yoga then Hatha is a good place to start - it is simply the general term (meaning “sun” and “moon”) for yoga in general. Thus everyone will teach differently - my classes will vary in style week and all the instructors will differ from each other . But it’s far from a beginners class - there’s lots of options available for everybody in any Hatha class. (Ceilidh)

VINYASA YOGA

Monday 7am (Laura)/ Monday 5:45pm (Ranjit) / Tuesday 10:30 (Laura)/ Tuesday 11:35 (Laura) / Wednesday 4:15 (Laura)/ Wednesday 5:15 (Laura) / Sunday 11:15am (Ceilidh)

Built around the vinyasa flow, this is a strong and powerful class for people wanting more of a challenge. I’d recommend vinyasa for more advanced yogis or people who might be new to yoga but know they have a good level of strength and fitness. Either way be prepared to get a sweat on!  (Ranjit)

YIN YOGA

Friday 6:15 pm/ Sunday with Nidra 6pm (Rupi)

Yin is about holding poses at their deepest level; intending to push past the perceived comfort zone into a state which actually becomes very therapeutic. I teach two Yin classes at PFC, one of which has a 30min Nidra on the end - an ancient form of meditation aimed at helping participants fall into a deep sleep at night. (Rupi)

KUNDALINI YOGA

Friday 10am (Laura)

Kundalini is an energetic and fast moving flow based around the spine. It is essentially cardio but if you need to slow down that element it still has huge benefits - don’t feel like you have to keep up with the whole class! It’s root purpose is to engage the feminine energies associated with the spinal chakras, so be prepared for lots of chanting and tradition in line with the breath and flow. One for those who want to engage yoga on a deeper level (Laura)

IYENGAR YOGA

Sunday 10am

Iyengar Yoga is an all-abilities class focused on using blocks to condition alignment - all other types yoga may feature elements of it, but this class is solely based on the teachings of the teacher V.S. Iyengar. Total beginners absolutely welcome (Maya)

PILATES

Monday 12:15 (Milly)/ Tuesday 7pm (Jane) / Wednesday 12:30 (Lauren) Thursday 7am (Jules)/ Thursday 6:45 (Lauren)/ Friday 4:15 (Milly) Friday 5:15 (Milly)/ Saturday 9:30 (Lauren)

Breathe And Glide  Monday 11:15/Friday 12:15

There’s plenty of Pilates available at PFC, all with differing styles. From slow and steady to slightly more dynamic, or bodyweight or (in the case of my class) more equipment focused with weights and the Magic Circle. All are united by the activation of the spine through strength and stability. Don't forget Fiona's Breathe And Glide class inspired by Reformer Pilates too!

YOGALATES

Tuesday 7am / Thursday 10:15am  (Milly)

People often turn up to Yogalates expecting a class where one half is yoga and half is Pilates, but it’s actually yoga with Pilates breath and principles - for example adding Pilates-styles pulses to yoga flows. As a result, it is a pretty serious workout so remember to take it at your own pace and enjoy yourself (Milly)

LES MILLS BODY BALANCE

Tuesday 4:45 (Cate) Tuesday 5:45 (Cate) Wednesday 9:15 (Laura)/ Wednesday 10:15 (Laura) Saturday 11:30 (Laura)

Following the Les Mills format of choreographed, track by track workouts, Body Balance is an all abilities class which I would just describe as yoga to music (with a Tai Chi warmup and a more Pilates based core track). It’s a relatively quick flow with lots of challenging options but is also great if you want to try yoga but might be daunted by the concept of it (Cate)
